GIVING THANKS
TO THE PLANET

“Howcan I keepThanksgivinggreen without
addi ng more work to an already busy day?”
DANNY SAYS: It’s a cinch to go green on Turkey Day. Sometimes
the greener solution is the laziest. Here’s what you can do:

While you maybe used to covering oven racks
with aluminum foil for easy cleanup, it’s greener not to. Foil
reduces heat flow and increases cooking time, which uses more
energy and raises your utility bill. You can also cut energy use
(by as much as 80 percent) if you cook side dishes in a small
convection or toaster oven.

Buying organic fruits and veggies is the greenest
way to go, but don’t let avoiding pesticides cause you stress.
Conventionally grown produce with the lowest concentration of
pesticides are common Thanksgiving Day staples: asparagus,
broccoli, cabbage, onions, and even frozen peas and corn. One
caveat: Tomatoes can be treated with up to 30 different pesticides,
so look for organic versions even in canned and processed forms.
LO AD IT UP
A full dishwasher uses half the energy and one-sixth the
water of washing by hand. Go greener by choosing a phosphate-
free detergent, such as the new Smarty Dish cubes by Method
(methodhome.com);
they’re also biodegradable and bleach-free.

The day after Thanksgiving, I save gas and
conserve my own energy by skipping the mall and sleeping in.

Typical low-emissivity glass coatings double window performance,
but still fall well below the efficiency that insulated walls offer. A new manufacturing
approach involves suspending several layers of reflective film between panes of
coated glass to create more cavities, which dramatically raises insulating values. See
seriousmaterials.com
for one example.
